On the morning of 27 September, heavy fighting broke out along the line of contact. Azerbaijan announced the start of a counteroffensive; martial law was declared in the country.
The offensive advanced primarily in the south, along the Aras River. In early October the city of Jabrayil and the surrounding villages came under Azerbaijani control.
The liberation of the city of Fuzuli and a number of villages was announced — one of the key milestones on the southern front.
In the second half of October the cities of Zangilan and Gubadli came under control, along with dozens of villages; the fighting drew closer to Shusha.
The liberation of Shusha — an ancient cultural centre on commanding heights — became the turning point of the war. This day is marked as Victory Day (Zəfər Günü).
A trilateral statement on a complete ceasefire was signed (by the leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia). The fighting ended; Russian peacekeepers were deployed to the conflict zone.
